Steve Burgess

The Palm Desert track has been the host of the JBRL Nitro Series since its inception back in 2007 and now in 2013 was host to Round 2 of the Nitro Series. Friday started off a bit on the warm side with many of the racers showing up for Fridays practice. Jimmy Babcock was down early to make sure everything got setup for a smooth day on Saturday. Bright and Early at 6am Saturday morning the racers were lined up at the gate waiting to get their pits setup and practice going. As always the JBRL Tech Crew was in full force, John, Kenny, Christy and Jimmy at the helm would put on a super smooth show. Qualifying was fierce as always and the track was dialed providing some great racing. Sportsman Buggy once again was the biggest class of the day with many of the SoCal fast guys shooting for the win.

Sportsman Truggy would see Jose Alvarado (TQ) and Victor Guerrero battle pretty hard for the first half of the race swapping positions then Victor laid it down putting a full lap on Jose and the rest of the field.

Sportsman Buggy’s TQ was Victor Guerrero hoping to back to back in Sportsman. Unfortunately Victor would suffer like many in the mains flaming out. For a while it seemed like nobody wanted to lead this race as all that did suffered some sort of problem. In the end it was Steve Loucks and Harley Hall followed by the last qualifier from the C-Main Brian Kuskie who bumped all the way to podium.

Intermediate Truggy saw Dane Jackson (TQ) lead from the start. Early on Eddie Laret would make a charge for the lead only to suffer problems and drop out. Dillon Hoffman and Brian Givens would round out the podium.

Intermediate Buggy was one of the best races of the day with these simi pro’s putting on quite a show. This time Dillon Hoffman set the TQ with the only 14 lap run in Intermediate but would battle hard with many during the race. Once again Eddie Laret looked to be the one to beat only to go out with mechanical issues again. Dane Jackson and Robert Wickham would battle hard with Dane coming out on top followd by Wickham and Hoffman.

40+ was once again highly contested with Kyosho’s Tim Long and Losi’s Robert Wickham battling for TQ. Long would take TQ but have flame out problems during both of his pit stops allowing Wickham to cruse to a 2 lap victory over Tim Long and Miguel Perez in 3rd. Walking around the pits one very funny thing was overheard “These pro guys are Sand Bagging in the 40+ Class.” We all got a kick out of that one and I’m still tying to figure out how we Sand Bag in 40+

E-Buggy was fast with Losi’s Mike Truhe taking TQ over teammate Adam Drake and JQ’s Chris Marrale. The 3 of them pretty much left the field in the dust with Chris battling hard for the first half of the race. Eventually Truhe and Drake would pull away to battle for the lead with Truhe just squeaking out the win over the Drake.

Expert Truggy had Kyosho’s Cody King on TQ with Losi’s Adam Drake and new Serpent Driver Matt Schrefffler rounding the top 3. Alabama’s Blake Boggs coming all the way west to try his hand with the fast guys. Off the start Drake and King battled hard they King laid the smack down setting the fastest laps of the day during his main. Jason Miller would also battle hard at the beginning only to allow Serpents Matt Schreffler to pass him in pursuit of the leaders. In the end it was King, Drake and Schreffler just as they had qualified.

Expert Buggy was the final race of the day and this time Saw The Drake on TQ with King and Truhe. At the drop the field was tight and once again King and Drake would battle hard. During the first half of the race PDRCR Owner Chris Marrale would run in the top 3 only to suffer a flame out as he came into the pits. Alabama’s Blake Boggs would also make the A-Main allowing for some good track time with the pro’s. During the race many would suffer from fuel stop issues mostly related to cool fuel going into warm engines it was a true test of man and machine. In the end Cody King would take the Win making it a double for the day in Expert followed by Adam Drake and Mike Truhe.

It was a great day even with Mother Nature making it a bit on the hot side. The Palm Desert Track Crew did an excellent job on the track and the JBRL crew once again ran a flawless race…

XRAY racers can now run the signature AVID machined piston setup on the XB4 buggy. The AV1033 pistons are custom machined for XB4 shocks to tune high speed and low speed damping separately with 2 large 1.5mm (or 1.6mm) holes and 2 small 1.1mm holes (we call it the 2+2 piston). AVID’s test drivers found that these pistons help provide the traction and bump handling of running lighter shock oil or larger piston holes, while still maintaining the control of running heavier oil or smaller hole piston when taking on jumps.

by Anthony Rivas

Anthony Rivas of Rivas Concepts sent us this rock crawling report from a recent RECON G6 event that took place in Northern California… A RECON G6 radio controlled scale adventure event is a themed based r/c scale day of fun. The amount of drive time and driving challenge is only topped by the comradery experienced during the stage and that a RECON G6 is geared for family fun. The Hunt for Unio RECON G6 honored the Maidu Native Americans. They were the first people to settle in Nevada County and “Unio” was the protector of the north fork of the Feather River and seem to resemble sasquatch. That was all the intel adventure seekers needed and the hunt was on.

Some drivers, or G6’ers once they have finished a driving stage, made tribal scale items for a time bonus. The terminology for this is “…not mandatory, but highly recommended.” That is what Parker, the founder of the RECON G6, informs participants. An acorn netted G6’ers a time bonus, because that was a staple food of the Maidu Tribe. Just like the theme’s of a RECON G6, the scale items are different at each one.

The stage was set over the 2nd largest monolithic slab of granite in California, Bald Rock. Rock Climbers, hikers, & mountain bikers all enjoy this secluded area nestled in the Sierra Nevadas. This stage, G6’ers traversed water, rock, and great California dirt. The average overall finishing time was approximately 3 hours. Yes, 3 hours of adventure, driving, and fun.

Finishing a RECON G6 is like winning a RECON G6. Finishing prizes from sponsors of the RECON G6 are handed out after the “Driver of the Day” awards have been given to the driver in each class. The RECON G6 is one of the few events that I have ever been to that challenges more than just your r/c driving skill and with time bonuses and time penalties, the Driver of the Day honors could go to anyone.

If you are new to the r/c scaler scene or have been an avid scaler for years, I would encourage everyone to attend a RECON G6 event. You will see me getting my scaler fix, in the next RECON G6.

Indoor 1/10 scale Off-Road racing has taken off around the world but the traction conditions can vary wildly from loose and dusty to super wheelie traction. The V1 Suburbs performs exceptionally well at tracks with pure clay and medium to high traction and the Proton eclipses its predecessor by providing more forward grip and being easier to drive.

San Diego RC Raceway has been host to the 1st annual DE/Panther Racing Series this year and it has been a huge success. Being based in San Diego, Tekno RC showed up in force. Barry Baker finished the series with a 1st place overall in both 1/8th Buggy and Pro4. Barry’s EB48 and SCT410 were flawless for the series. But Tekno RC drivers didn’t stop there. Josh Bertrand and Pres Ilog continued the series podium sweep in 1/8th Buggy, finishing 1st and 2nd overall with their EB48′s.

In Pro4 the results were similar and Tekno RC would claim the entire podium again. Pres Ilog finished 2nd place and Charles Dunn finished up the series in 3rd. All podium finishes were made with the Tekno RC SCT410. We’d like to congratulate all of our drivers on their wins and thank San Diego RC Raceway for hosting the series.

Our good friends at Red RC sent us their press release on this weekends Euro Touring Series race in Apeldoorn. After an 11-week break, the Yokomo Euro Touring Series resumes this weekend (May 17-19) in the Netherlands with the beautiful Apeldoorn track getting the second half of the World famous electric touring car championship’s sixth season underway. A hugely popular track with competitors, the fourth round attracting 280 entries, defending champion Ronald Volker heads into the weekend at the top of the championship standings ahead of Yokomo team-mate Yannic Prumper and last year’s race winner Marc Rheinard. Volker, who has Associate Sponsors two wins and a third to his credit this season, will be hoping he has much better fortunes than he experienced 12-months ago in Apeldoorn when a difficult qualifying meant he would end up racing in the E-Final.
