Billy Easton wins LFR race at Space Coast R/C

Billy Easton wins LFR race at Space Coast R/C

This past weekend was the First Annual LFR race at Space Coast R/C in Cocoa Beach,FL. The facility is the largest Indoor track in the state of Florida. They use Red Clay and prep it with grape soda and sugar. The traction is pretty intense and the layouts are always a blast. Angel and his crew did a great job keeping the track up and the race program going. They have an onsite chef to cook all different types of food and keep the racers from starving all day. There were around 200 Entries for the event and 21 or so heats. It was a typical IFMAR qualification format with 2 quals and a single A-Main. There were a fair amount of sponsored drivers in attendance, Paul Wynn, Ryan Eckert, Daimon Birkowicz, Jeremy Harris, Jadar Lopez and a few others. This track has been the home of a lot of the testing and development of the Serpent Spyder SRX-2. I have several race days at this track to develop the car for durability and also performance. This was the largest race I have entered thus far.

Qualification:

As qualification set off, my first round was going well until my tires went away about 3 minutes in. The car became difficult to drive and I began making to many mistakes. That round, the top finisher was Paul Wynn with his AE B4.2. He drove a smooth 5 minute qualifier with minimal troubles. The second round came around and I opted for a longer lasting tire (harder compound) and my car was on point for a fast time. Although the track was a little dusty I posted a good time and was able to take overall TQ for the event. It was nice to be on Pole, as the car was working well and it never hurts to have a good outing with such a new car.

Main:

After waiting what seemed to be all day, finally our main was up. I changed up the setup for the final to something I thought would be more drivable for the final. We were very lucky to have the track blown off just before our final. This gave us a premium track for the 5 minute final. At the sound of the horn, my car felt really good. It was stable and fairly easy to drive. The changes numbed out the front end and although it was a little slower in the corners you could run lap after lap with no troubles. I was able to pull away from the tone and steadily put a gap between me and second place. The finishing order was myself, Paul Wynn, Damon Birkowicz, Ryan Eckert, and Andy Darby.

Day 9 P2 – 2011 IFMAR Worlds Report By Zack Rogers

Here is yesterday’s 2nd report by Zack Rogers

Day 9 Part 2 4wd Wrap Up

As the 4wd class and the overall event come to a close we would like to first thank everyone for checking out our reports on the 2011 IFMAR Electric World Championships. Lets get right into business and give you a short run down of the race action. In A main 1 nobody seemed like they wanted to lead it for more then a lap or so, Maifield saw his TQ position slip away each main event after mistakes over the big quad jump.

Jorn Numann who started second in the first two mains and on pole in a three had a great run going in A1 till electronic failure while holding a 4 second lead. He went on to get a win in A3 on a last corner pass to the inside of Maifield up the corner step on.

Now on to the man who won it all…Cav! This guy was maybe not the fast lap time wise but with nerves of steal he would find his way up front both A1 and A2 and never make a mistake to pull of a 2x for World Titles while in Vaasa, which makes up a total of 4 now.

Here are some driver quotes…

Ryan Cavalieri

RCI - After already taking home a WC in 2wd what were you expecting in 4wd?

RC - “I knew I had a car to win it, just didn’t get the chance to show it in the qualifiers due to some small wrecks but obviously my goal was to double up.”

Khoto Akimoto

RCI - You made the main event in the 4wd class after coming a little short of doing so in 2wd are you happy of where you qualified overall in both classes?

KA - “I am very pleased to be here and make the 4wd main even though I wanted to be in both” “Big thank you to Kyosho and all my sponsors.”

Jorn Nuemann

RCI - We saw you walking away with A1 and having a misfortune, but a good finish in A2 and a win in A3 was good enough for 2nd overall, are you pleased with that or do you feel that this was your race to win?

JN“It is not good my car stopped in A1 because I thought I could win, but overall I am happy to be on the podium.”

The defending WC Martin Atcher had some things to say when we asked him what his goals were after his finishes in 2009.

MA – “I know I was not going to be a threat like I was in South Africa as I know all the top guys are here this time. But I still wanted to be up there.”

Finally we wrap things up with a couple of pics of drivers playing around on the go kart track which only about 100 kilometers behind the pit area. Guest WRC driver Mikko Hirvonen was there to showcase how to drive a real car while allowing anyone else to take a ride for 50 Euro. It was fun to see guys like Tebo and Cav playing around on it. Eight Scale WC Cody King went for a “spin” ending on a high note after hitting the tire wall before coming on the straight away.

As for myself I will be writing my own race report when I get back to the states. We are spending a fun day here in Vaasa to site see and hangout before leaving to the airport tomorrow at 6 in the morning. Hope you guys continue to check our race coverage as we gear up for the 2011 ROAR Nats next weekend at Nor-Cal Hobbies.

Note: We thank Zack Rogers and our website sponsors for supporting this website and making our coverage of the 2011 IFMAR Buggy Worlds possible!

Day 9 – 2011 IFMAR Worlds Report By Zack Rogers

Here is today’s 1st report from Zack Rogers…

Day 9 4wd Qualifying Wrap Up

Arriving at the track to a light drizzle which extended practice times to help “groove” the track back into shape, we found that overall times were still going to around the same as yesterday. With yesterdays last round not counting due to the fact not everyone would get to run on the same track condition, your two best runs of four would be combined to set your position overall.

Ryan Maifield picked up where he left off and got another TQ this morning making him the overall TQ for the 4wd division. Second and third would be held down by Jorn Neumann and freshly crowned 2wd WC Ryan Cavalieri.

Personally I had yet another tough break while running a time that would yet again put me top 20, I fell short of it by around 100 spots because of a rear A arm break. This would mean I only have one round finished of the 5 times I raced because of three breaks and a round that didn’t count towards anything (rain out, once again top 20.) With that being said I am pretty bummed out on my luck but at the same time I know I have the speed and can do it…so the experienced gained is awesome and I still feel lucky to be here and honored to be able to bring some race coverage to everyone else. Stay tuned for more info on each leg in the finals!

Note: We hope to receive a few more reports from Zack later today…

Day 8 P2 – 2011 IFMAR Worlds Report By Zack Rogers

Here is Zack Rogers 2nd report for today…

Day 8 Part 2 4wd Qualifying

What an epic row of events that have taken place in Vaasa at 2011 IFMAR Electric Off road Worlds, and today was no exception. We arrived at the track to beautiful skys and warm weather, now after 3 rounds in the books and a half round that will not be accounted for, the down pour began.

The official ruling says that since the whole round was not done under the same conditions it can not be honored as an official round.

But even with natures random showers we managed to get a few good runs in with Ryan Maifield taking it home for Team Reedy/AE in the first two…and a remarkable run by Team Durangos own Jorn Nuemann in round three. Both of the already 2wd A main finalist will have their chance to duke it out along with the rest of the crew for overall TQ tomorrow if the weather permits.

Here are some guys having fun in the pits….Neil Round made a bag buggy/boat. He was on a TQ pace till his electronics went for a short melt down, but at least he was a crowd favorite!

Day 8 – 2011 IFMAR Worlds Report By Zack Rogers

Here is yesterday’s report by Zack Rogers…

Day 8 4wd Practice:

Well we are off at it again, now that 2wd has been wrapped up and Team AE/Orion team driver, Ryan Cavalieri has been crowned World Champion everyone begins to prepare their 4wd cars. The already difficult 2wd has been modified just a bit for the 4wd race and it seems to have a little more speed, along with some of the sections being a bit tougher this time around.

Once again 8 rounds of sorted practice were ran with many different names showing speed throughout each and every round, but for the most part it was regulars up to the top of the sheets. After the day came to a close it would be Elliott Boots with a 23.338 to set fastest lap over the rest of the 147 racers.

Just as the last practice was completed the showers started to roll in, keeping the 15 packed heats of racers on their toes of how to set up their cars for tomorrows qualifying.

Stay tuned for more on the 2011 IFMAR World Champs to see if it will be Ryan C. doubling up, or prerace winner Lee Martin making it happen in his so called “better” class, possibly a new face to the spot light such as young Dakotah Phend? Only time will tell and www.rcinsider.com will be bringing it all to you first hand!

More Pics…

Note: Zack had some computer problems in Finland yesterday and we will do our best to get his reports up as soon as we can!

Day 6 – 2011 IFMAR Worlds Report By Zack Rogers

Here is today’s 1st report from Zack Rogers…

Day 6

Qualifying here at the 2011 IFMAR Worlds is now wrap up for 2wd. The final round that was took today would go to Neil Cragg from Great Britain which would score him the lowest amount of points to take the overall TQ.

Dustin Evans also put in his best run of the weekend only .009sec behind Cragg. But through it all Maifield has shown to be the most consistent finishing third for the round and using that number as his grid spot as well.

Here is a picture of the main board that list which main all 138 drivers will be racing in…. As for myself I will be on sheet four(D Main) after a few good runs, and some not so good ones. All in all what a time it has been thus far, and be sure to check back in to see who will be crowned the next 2wd World Champion.

Here are some more pics from Zack…
